A Selection of Questions and Answers Attributed to Theodore of Mopsuestia / Foreword, Syriac Text and English Translation

Abstract

The publication aims to introduce into scientific circulation a collection of ques­ tions and answers attributed to Theodore of Mopsuestia, touching on basic issues of Christian dogmatics. This article contains the text of 63 questions and their solutions from the man­ uscript Brit. Lib. mss. syr. 9; thus, we believe, this is the complete text of the collection, part of which (36 questions and answers) was published by Alphonse Mingana in 1919 from anoth­ er manuscript Harris Cod. syr. 146 that was considered lost. As will be shown in the publica­ tion, this manuscript did not perish and ended up in the Mingana collection under the num­ ber syr. 108. In addition to Theodore of Mopsuestia, whose direct authorship we dispute, the text contains questions attributed to Dāḏīšō‘ of Qatar, Joseph Ḥazzāyā, Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nyssa, as well as a fragment of the eschatological prayer of Serapion and a ci­ tation from Jacob of Edessa.
